Janus

The Interventionists who help a technological civilization develop in Mesoamerica use as "cover" a Roman trade ship reaching Central America in about 400 BC. They use a carving of the god Janus on their prow. I also like using the term "Janus" because of the interventionist "trick" of abandoning their attempts to modify human civilization in the "old world" and shift their efforts to America.

The "long count" calendar had a cycle of 5,125 years. Our year 2012 corresponds to year 5,125 since the origin of humans in Mayan mythology. However, in the story, a time traveler who knows about "the disaster of 2012" selects the start of the 5,125 year so as to mark the year of the nanotechnology disaster. In Pultep's reality, there was no calendar based on "Anno Domini".
